In 2012, to celebrate Mother’s Day, Havaianas revealed an exclusive collection designed by Hollywood celebrity moms Courteney Cox, Nina Garcia, Rebecca Romijn, and Tori Spelling for Baby Buggy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing families in need of essential products and educational services for their children. Havaianas did not stop there, as in the same year, the boundless joy and energy inherent to the brand was intensified when it collaborated with Italian fashion house Missoni for punchy-patterned flip-flops that became everyone’s ticket to summer.

This year, Havaianas proudly introduces its collaboration with Filipino illustrator and Havaianatico Dan Matutina for the first Make Your Own Havaianas glow-in-the-dark commemorative pair. Dan Matutina + Havaianas, available in carbon blue sole, features spacemen with space markers connecting the stars to form images—representing how Havaianas enables everyone’s creativity and imagination to take off to greater heights.

On May 18, VISPOP – the 1^st Visayan Pop Music Festival will have its Finals Night at Benedicto College Artists Hall.

Taking on the ambivalent tagline “Bisayaa Uy!”, VISPOP aims to alleviate the current state of Cebuano music on the radio by introducing a more professional and competitive playlist of new Cebuano songs. However, its organizers are quick to point out that VISPOP is not just another contest, it is a songwriting campaign.

From 80 entries, VISPOP chose six finalists who will battle it out on May 18 at the Benedicto College Artists Hall. They are Marianne Dungog & Kyle Wong with “Balay Ni Mayang”, Paterno Niñal with “Hinaut”, Alphecca Perpetua with “Historias”, Marie Maureen Salvaleon with “Pa-Pictura Ko Nimo, Gwapo”, Lourdes Maglinte with “Laylay” and Jewel & Joe Villaflores with “Duyog.”

Each of the interpreters will be performing with a live full band on that day with guest performers Missing Filemon — who will be paying tribute to Max Surban, and Bisaya rapper Kris Villarino aka Pain in the Neck. This is a spectacle that will be directed by VISPOP core team member and Artist Ko Vice Chairman Cattski Espina.

The judges for the Finals Night are DTI-Director Nelia Navarro, Cebuana award-winning singer Anna Fegi and FILSCAP board member and legendary singer-songwriter Gary Granada. There are three categories for the judging criteria – Music, Lyrics & Over-all Impact. Music, quality of melody, harmony and rhythm is 30%. Lyrics, arrangement of words and ideas is 30% as well. Finally Over-All Impact, or the musical treatment, commercial appeal, radio-friendliness, uniqueness and other breakthrough qualities is 40%.

VISPOP is organized by Artist Ko or Artists & Musicians Marketing Cooperative led by its core team Ian Zafra, Cattski Espina, Jude Gitamondoc and Insoy Niñal in cooperation with FILSCAP (Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).

April was World Hemophilia month, and Blood Brothers Aid Inc., a non-profit organization based in the Philippines, aims to raise awareness about hemophilia in the country and to get more Filipinos to recognize the problem and help through blood or monetary donations.

Do you know someone who may suffer from hemophilia?

Following an injury, a person with hemophilia may take a longer time to heal from his wounds because his blood lacks the protein (clotting factor) instrumental in clotting.

The usual symptoms of hemophilia include deep bruising, joint pain and swelling caused by internal bleeding, spontaneous bleeding (e.g. nosebleeds), or prolonged bleeding from cuts, after surgery, or after a tooth extraction.

Hemophilia can be diagnosed by taking a blood sample and measuring the level of clotting factor activity in the blood.

Help bring treatment to the Philippines.

Hemophilia is mainly treated with replacement therapy. Clotting factor concentrates taken from healthy blood is injected into a hemophiliac’s bloodstream. Once it reaches the affected area, bleeding is expected to slow down and eventually stop. This treatment has to be done shortly after injury so as to avoid further pain, as well as damage to the person’s muscles, joints, and organs.

Clotting factor, however, is not readily available in the Philippines. International groups or volunteers ship medicine in from other countries, though supplies are minimal. In the absence of these drugs, a person in need of replacement therapy would require blood or plasma transfusions, and are at the mercy of the limited supply of blood available in hospitals. There are reported incidents of deaths among hemophiliacs due to the long wait for blood donations.

That’s why it is important for those who might show signs of having hemophilia to be diagnosed at the soonest possible time. It is also why more Filipinos need to be made aware of the disorder, so that we can help provide the support and treatments necessary for people who suffer from it.

This has been me lately. Whats inside my bag – Mario Badescu face mist, Flawless Sun Protect Gel, Enjoy Vouchers, Shades, organizer, a huge fan, L’occitane Lotion, wallet, contact lens solution, and the Blackberry z10.

My makeup kit? Let’s not go there. Ha. So I find myself toggling meetings this season and braving the godawful 30-degree heat in Cebu and cursing myself for not fixing the car A/C last month.But hey – the highlight of my day –

The Blackberry Z10 is the older yet lesser smug version of the Apple scapegoat the iPhone5 or the ersatz know-it-all the Samsung S4. It is light and handy enough to pocket in your handbag yet the 4.2-inch screen is just right to assist you in your meetings and perhaps, presentations in the future.

I subscribed to Globe’s PowersurfPlan P499  with 1 g of data and good for 30 days and was bowled over by the almost 2Mbps download time from Speedtest.net and scoffed that Coffee Bean’s wifi has nothing on this rich and vivid exclusive to Globe LTE network (yikes – sorry, Allain!).

Bjorn was absent during one of those meetings so I had to call him via BBM Video, while on my video call, I was able to use the screen share function and showed him the Word document I saved on my device as if he were present in that meeting. This only used 5 mb!

The switch from BBM Chat to BBM Video maximized that call as I was able to show him a document from my device through SCREEN SHARING and incredulously thought it was awesome that the Screen Share feature lets you show photos, your browser, or review a business document together– yey, a glorified version of Skype! Blackberry makes chatting so mainstream! Gasp!

Talk about super features overload, yes? I defy you not to fall prey on that BBM Video call button no matter how addicting it is. Sometimes the BBM Video icon in green fails to show up unless you have reliably fast LTE/4G internet from Globe or if you sign up with Globe Powersurf plans, you would be video calling for hours. With video calls only at 5MB per minute!

My recent subscription with Globe Powersurf Plan at 499 is just right for someone like me who would only turn on the LTE network when needed to save battery life – by “when needed”, this means idle time queuing, waiting for friends at the cafe, being stuck in traffic or sending last minute emails.
