//Update! MAC Cosmetics in Cebu is now open in Rustan’s Department Store, Ayala Center Cebu.
//Update! MAC Ruby Woo is now P1,000 not P900.
It pops. It attracts. It smolders. Hey, it is sultry. And fun. What is it with red lipstick that just makes all negative energy go away? I’ve heard of endorphins from tangerines but red lipstick just takes the cake.
Pat McGrath, most influential make-up artist in the world says red lips is Spring’s 2011 Beauty Trend to try now. “It’s a return to that old-fashioned sense of glamour,” McGrath says. “Red lipstick is the stiletto heel of make-up,” also says Terry Barber, director of make-up artistry at MAC. Crimson lips were also spotted on Chloe Sevigny, Lady Gaga, designer Tracy Reese, actresses’ Amber Heard and Leelee Sobieski, and models’ Joy Bryant, Angela Bellote, Kenza Fourati, Anais Mali, Alessandra Ambrossio, Karlie Kloss during the 2011 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). If red can be worn anytime as a glaze, a stain, a sheer gloss, or a full-on lipstick which brings a brazen sense of femininity your overall look, how iconic could red lipsticks be in a woman’s beauty arsenal!
Don’t get me wrong. My red lipstick inspiration is Dita Von Teese and wanted to get the same texture of matteness she has been wearing before and voila – hello, MAC Ruby Woo! Thick, rich, blue-based matte red, this has been a favorite of Von Teese and a regular on Gwen Stefani’s lips.
MAC Ruby Woo $14.50 or P900
Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street! What made M·A·C famous.
Vivid bluish-red (Matte)
A fan because —
Smells like vanilla.
Packaged inside a matte box, the lipstick has a steel base and a plastic cap.
Notches on the base to grasp the cap is very convenient
Very very bright red. Pigment level is off the charts.
Not a fan because —
When you apply, the color dragged along my lips. Hard and dry. Yes, it has a drying formula.
If you had on too much balm prior, it would inevitably feather.
Expensive and not available in Cebu
Fades after eating. Found myself retouching sometimes
It leaves you this uniform red lines around your lips and the insides need to be filled out with color.
How to apply and prepare your lips for redness —
Exfoliate your lips by brushing them along when you brush your teeth.
Apply on lip balm for absorption. Wait for 2 minutes till it moisturizes.
Prime lips with a primer.
To prevent bleeding, use a well-matched lipliner. Heavy emphasis on well-matched.
How to make it last —
Tried the old priming trick for lipstick? Dust on powder, apply red lipstick, blot and dust powder again subtly this time.
Blotting combats the feathering.
The brightness of Ruby Woo is perfect for rocking out your weekends whenever you are going to a concert or any night that you’d think would rock you out. Although other red lippies that I want to try such as NARS’ Jungle Red, Chanel’s Rouge, Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice, Givenchy’s Absolutely Irresistible Red and Kat Von D’s Hellbent (a lot, noh?) might be next in line, I can still say this would be the perfect color for those pin-up girl moments of a woman. For starters, always make sure everything else is simple and clean when wearing MAC Ruby Woo. A nude face is ideal. Tone down blush and eye makeup. Wear monochrome clothes.

Find the right shade ––
Warm skinned women should opt for yellow or orange based reds. No bluish red for women who smoke. The teeth won’t flatter. Since our skin tone and complexion changes as we age, it will really require different make up needs. Stick to matte red lip shades when you’re below 40. Or check out the veins on the inside of your wrist – if blue, try blue-red like MAC’s Russian Red. If greenish, get the orange-red. It is going to be a verrry tedious job.
Wearing red lips can be tricky at the best of times. It can be sexy, glamorous, and mood-changing. Many women have attested to feeling more confident with red lips or have used it mostly for the ideal pick-me-up in depressing times. This insanely bright orangey-red “in your face” color that MAC’s Ruby Woo gives out does tend to intimidate so make sure it is within your comfort zone. Wearing red is a responsibility and YOU BETTER GET IT RIGHT.
Note that the review above is merely my opinion. I am not a professional makeup artist just a beauty blogger in Cebu so any recommendation can be taken as is. What you end up choosing (if you are interested in this shade of lipstick) is still in your discretion.
